A practical way to organize an online catalogue around the questions buyers bring to search.
Start with the buying decision
Imagine a store selling desks, trays and organizers. A buyer looking for a study desk has different questions from one comparing desk organizers. Before writing titles, list those decisions and match each to a page that can answer it well. A collection can explain the range; a product page can supply dimensions, finish and availability.
Check the path from query to product
Write down a search phrase, the page a visitor should reach and the next useful action. Repeat this for several variations in the language customers use. If two pages compete to answer the same question, decide what distinguishes them. A difference in material, size or use may deserve a clear comparison instead of another nearly identical landing page.
Build a brief someone can use
Give the writer the customer question, the products to feature, useful comparisons and any facts that need confirmation. Give the developer the internal links and navigation changes. Review the finished page on a phone and follow the path to a product. If the reader still has to search elsewhere for dimensions or delivery information, the brief is unfinished.
Try the page with a real question
Take a question your sales team hears often, such as whether a desk will fit in a small room. Open the proposed collection page on a phone and look for the answer. Can you compare suitable sizes without opening every product? Is there a clear route to the individual item? Write down what is missing before adding more text.
Use that exercise when reviewing the brief. A short explanation beside the products may do more for the shopper than a long introduction above them. Keep the practical information close to the decision it supports.
Check what needs updating
Collections change as products arrive or sell out. Assign someone to review the page when the range changes, including links to unavailable items and examples that no longer apply. A useful search page needs to remain a useful shopping page after it has been published.
